The beau­ti­ful River Salzach flows through the lovely old city between the majes­tic Kapiziner­berg and Monks­berg city moun­tains, while perched high above it is the largest fully pre­served fortress in cen­tral Europe. Salzburg Fortress began being built in 1077 by Arch­bishop Geb­hard. The fortress not only served to pro­tect the clergy and the gen­eral pop­u­la­tion but was also the place in which the arch­bishop invited selected indi­vid­u­als to attend lav­ish par­ties and cel­e­bra­tions.

Here, high above the roofs of Mozart’s city sur­rounded by centuries-​old fortress walls you will find the ideal oppor­tu­nity to dine and cel­e­brate. The breath­tak­ing view from the ter­races and many rooms of the panoramic restau­rant over the city and coun­try­side is unique and unsur­pass­able and will impress you and your guests. The choice of many rooms can accom­mo­date any kind of cel­e­bra­tion and are the ideal set­ting. From the cozy Pine Room (14 peo­ple) to the his­tor­i­cal Coat of Arms Hall (150 peo­ple), any size of party can be catered for. With a lit­tle luck you might even enjoy a sun­set on the hori­zon – you could not offer guests more.

In win­ter, you have a unique and impres­sive view from the ter­race above the old city whilst enjoy­ing a wel­com­ing drink of Glüh­wein (mulled wine), fruit Pun­sch or Brandy Pun­sch (Flam­ing Tongs Punch), and the chance of using the high­est Eis­stock­bahn (Aus­trian form of Curl­ing) in the city of Salzburg. Not to men­tion the atmos­pheric Christ­mas Mar­ket in the court­yard of the fortress which is open from Fri­day to Sun­day between 10am and 7pm.

Access to the fortress is hardly com­pa­ra­ble with the old times — the mod­ern­ized funic­u­lar rail­way takes you up to and down from the fortress in less than 1 minute.
