The Fortress Hohensalzburg has an overall length of 250 meters and an overall width of 150 meters and it is therefore the largest maintained Fortress structure in Central Europe. The Castle complex is located on the “Festungsberg” (Fortress Mountain) directly in the inner city of Salzburg. You can reach the Fortress Hohensalzburg conveniently with the Fortress funicular. Alternately you can hike up the mountain on foot. The Fortress Mountain is connected with the “Moenchsberg” (Monks Mountain). After your visit to the castle you undertake some impressive “city” hikes and enjoy some gorgeous views into the city.

Up in the Castle itself, imposing architecture and numerous museums await you, among them is the museum “Welt der Marionetten” (The World of Marionettes) with unique exhibits from the world famous marionette theatre as well as from other parts of the world. Especially noteworthy are also the “Burgschenke” (Castle Tavern) with its “historische Burgsaal” (Historical Castle Hall) as well as the Fortress Restaurant with its two lookout terraces. The oldest part of the Castle boasts of a history of more than 900 years. The first part was completed around the year “1077”. In the following centuries the landlords of the Castle – the Archbishops of Salzburg – continued on the construction of the castle. The money needed for the construction came from Salzburg’s salt mines. The “white gold” had turned Salzburg’s Rulers into wealthy men.
The greatest challenge that was ever afforded this Medieval Fortification was an uprising of the Peasants and Miners in the year 1525. However the Fortress was invulnerable and stayed that way. When you tour the Castle with its colossal Halls and Walls you will learn about the Castle’s long history through numerous anecdotes that are presented to you.
