Hellbrunn Palace – Salzburg’s Garden Jewel
At the Gateway to the City of Salzburg lies the Hellbrunn Palace. This Jewel of Manneristic architecture is surrounded by a giant Park, the Trick Fountains, and the Salzburg Zoo.
Markus Sittikus commissioned the construction of the Hellbrunn Pleasure Palace. He commissioned the Italian architect Santino Solari for the planning of the Palace during his term as Lord Archbishop from 1612 to 1619. In just three years the Italian created an architectural work of art. Especially noteworthy are the Trick Fountains located in the Garden of the Palace. The engineering skills of the past centuries brought about impressive Automation, Fountains, and Surprises, that have amused guests way back then as well as those of the present day.
The Hellbrunn Palace is surrounded by imposing Garden architecture. In its diversity the Park captivates with the interconnection of the artificially laid out Park landscape with Biotopes that were retained in their natural state. You stroll across Hills and Meadows, past Fountains and Ponds and then come to realize why “Hellbrunn” translates to “Healing Fountain”. For children the rambling meadows are ideal for all types of games. At the Children’s adventure area the kids can really let themselves go. Directly adjacent to the Park landscape is the Salzburg Zoo. Underneath the imposing face of a cliff you will stroll through the habitats of foreign lands and experience the animals up close. An additional Highlight in Hellbrunn: at the edge of the Palace complex you will find the Gazebo, the original Glass pavilion used in the award winning movie, “The Sound of Music”. During the time before Christmas the Hellbrunn Palace becomes the setting for the “Hellbrunner Adventzauber” (the “Magic of Advent” Christmas Fair). In the midst of these unique surroundings you will be presented with one of the most beautiful Advent Fairs in Austria.
